Dr. Sonya Wakil's Philosophy

Dr. Sonya Wakil has more than 20 years experience as a double board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and individual and family therapist. She utilizes a team-based approach using biological, developmental, psychological, cognitive and social therapies. Dr. Wakil believes in the importance of a comprehensive evaluation process performed at the beginning of treatment, allowing time and attention to be given to each patients' concerns to better evaluate and treat symptoms and challenges. It is vital to recognize that every individual is unique in presentation and needs.

In identifying a diagnosis, Dr. Wakil reviews the unique history and presentation of symptoms for each patient. In an active dialogue with the patient, she will review any development delays, disabilities, and biologic (genetics), psychological (self-concept) and sociologic (family roles, culture, community) factors. Emphasizing a comprehensive understanding of the issues being presented, a well-rounded diagnosis will be supported with the most advanced care (further testing, a conservative approach to medication, medical specialists, therapies, academic and supportive resources, alternative treatments, etc.). Referrals to providers are based on individual needs: including genetic testing, pediatric/adult neurology, developmental specialists, learning disability resources, autism support, trauma guidance, specialized therapists, schools and phase of life coaching.

Dr. Wakil will collaborate with your primary care doctors, specialists, therapists and schools as part of the treatment process. If medication is warranted, Dr. Wakil is conservative and will monitor the patient closely initially to ensure that the medication is effective and side effects are minimized. Once stabilized, the medication follow-up visits will be scheduled as needed per each individual case.
